Foresight versus Hindsight
We live now in a world where the individual/organisation will have to have the capacity to see around corners and what is beyond that wall of indifference.

We are in a world that is led by hindsight. Hindsight is where ‘The Digerati’, aka technologist, has led the individual/organisation globally. Data has already happened! Foresight has not. If we look at human history, the ability to possess foresight has catapulted organisations and individuals. If we look at human history, the ability to have foresight has catapulted humanity by invention. Invention is the ultimate definition of foresight.
Hindsight, a controllable entity
Hindsight is a controllable entity. Foresight is fearful and uncontrollable to the masses because it is an X. It is an unknown that terrifies individuals even though all we have is an unknown future to look forward to. Via this technologically driven diaspora, we now feel we can control outcomes. We feel comfortable because we feel we know. This has driven a society of a false sense of security, that has led to many delusions in the mind of the human.
Hindsight and foresight definition
Now, let’s look at the definitions and the etymology of the two words.
- Hindsight – 1) The ability to understand a situation or event after it has happened. The word originated in the 1800’s. 2) The understanding and tendency to believe that a party or accused committed a legal wrong based on the consequences of their choices or actions. 3) the word hind is synonymous with back.
- Foresight – 1) Fore means before and sight to perceive. 2) Threat or power of foreseeing: prevision, prescience. An act of looking forward, a view of the future. Two critical synonyms…. Clairvoyance and discernment.
With humanity being driven towards a technocratic way of being controlled (hindsight), it will be increasing. What I am labelling as ‘fearsight’ will be on the increase. When you feel you can control your surroundings and outcome because of the technocracy foresight will be continued to be lessened. When we add in AI many will be outsourcing their mind to it as if it is another being. However, humanity will still be needed to do foresight tasks. Humans must be able to imagine dreaming as a critical piece of the concept of foresight.
Pathway to a dynamic future
Foresight is the pathway for a dynamic future of the human based world. In order for us to continue, we must go to foresight and not be afraid of it. In order for us to continue, we must align with foresight. We must allow vision and visionary work to take place. Visionary work should not only be at DARPA because that work usually goes towards the destruction of the world around us. Billions of dollars go towards destruction. What about towards instruction?
Foresight is usually intangible. You can’t touch it or feel it, smell it. It goes against our five senses, which dictate what a human being is. Foresight asks you to go outside those five senses to get to that sixth sense. That sixth sense many ignore because of the tangibility question.
As a sometime day and short-term trader, I understand the importance of foresight. Seeing into the unknown, or what is called the future, is the defining element of becoming a trader. The legendary traders/investors like Paul Tudor Jones, Richard Dennis, Carl Icahn and of course the dean Warren Buffet are treated so majestically due to foresight. Those gentlemen have to live in the land of foresight. Explorers like Magellan, Lewis & Clarke and Shackleford were what I call ‘foresightologists’. They had the capacity to go where the masses could not or would not. Dreaming and imagining are the critical ingredients.
A foresightologist must have the ability to see and remote view multi-dimensionally. In this new era, you will have to live in the nuance. For clarity, I will define nuance. Nuance:
- A subtle difference in or shade of meaning, expression or sound.
See the invisable
They are willing to see the invisible. The ability to see what ‘is not there’ will be the superpower in this growing ‘age of compute’. This growing age of compute by the Digerati has bred what I label a ‘tsunami of compete’. Our minds will have to adjust to this level of competing. This age of compete will be led by foresight not data driven hindsight if you wish to be ahead of the game.
I close with this question for you and your organisation to ponder if you are looking backward (data driven) aka hindsight, will you be able to survive in this tsunami of compete? Foresight will be the only solution for your survival and the future of your organisation. Start making adjustments now. Having foresight as an integral part of corporate strategy is similar to data!
