Beyond the Surface and Unraveling the Deeper Dynamics of Competitive Intelligence

Yesterday, I read a fascinating article about Sara Imari Walker. It was about her work using physics to redefine life. She has a new book about this fascinating subject: life as no one knows it.

The excellent Big Think article discussed various aspects of defining life. Scientists still don’t have a satisfactory answer for what life is. Despite advances in biology, chemistry, and physics, we lack a fundamental explanation of life. We only have descriptions of what it does. The article and book ask some great questions:

  • Is life a complex chemical reaction?
  • Is it a self-organising system that defies entropy?
  • Or is it something deeper, an emergent property of the Universe itself?

The answers could help us unravel the mysteries of the origin of life on Earth, no less. They could also help us find life on other planets, which could look unlike anything we’ve ever encountered.

Don’t worry—we’re not going to share our thoughts on the meaning of life. But the article did get me thinking.

The Limitations of Surface-Level Data: Why You Need to Dig Deeper

Many businesses are in the same boat as scientists. They struggle to understand their market and competitors. Okay, maybe it is not as important as the meaning of life, but it is vital when they are getting their backsides handed to them. Scientists can describe what life does but can’t explain what it is. Business leaders often watch competitors, but they miss the deeper nature of the competition.

Is your competitor a tactical threat because of their marketing spend? Or are they leveraging a self-organizing strategy that defies typical market assumptions? Maybe they’re tapping into something deeper. It could be a trend or a shift in consumer behaviour. It might reshape your entire industry. Most companies are content to describe competitors’ surface-level actions. They note product launches, pricing models, and customer acquisition tactics.

It’s all about the right questions for you

But very few ask, “What is the essence of this competitor?” What drives them beyond what we can easily observe? And these questions, too:

  • What are the core values and mission of this competitor? Understanding helps drive their business decisions and strategies.
  • What unique products or services does this competitor offer? Identifying their distinctive offerings helps see what sets them apart.
  • Who is this competitor’s target audience or primary customer base? Knowing their customers gives insight into their market position and engagement.
  • What are the key strengths and competitive advantages of this competitor? To highlight areas where they excel and potentially influence your strategic planning.
  • How does this competitor position itself in the market compared to others? Is it through pricing, branding, or innovation? Why? This can shed light on their overall business approach.

Understanding this at a fundamental level could reveal not just how to compete today but also how to anticipate where the market is going next.  So many businesses fall behind because they lack deeper insight. They react to symptoms but miss the underlying forces at play.

Decoding the “Why” Behind Competitor Actions: The Power of Deeper Analysis

And this is why competitive intelligence, when done right, goes far beyond the basics. It’s not just about collecting data and keeping tabs on what your competitors are doing today. Real competitive intelligence helps you decode the “why” behind the numbers and actions. Data points and competitor reports are essential, but they’re only the surface. Plus, data will likely be used to measure your performance anyway. To justify the expenditure of the CI platform.

The real advantage lies in what lies underneath. The motivations, strategy shifts, and unseen forces drive market behaviour. This understanding lets you see past the noise of short-term tactics and focus on the long-term game.

Think of it like this: anyone can measure a competitor’s market share or count how many products they’ve launched. But that’s not what you are doing to win. The real insight is in knowing why they’re targeting a specific segment. Or why their innovation pipeline is accelerating now. Maybe they want to buy another company. (Why do they want to buy that company? Is it for a logical reason or something less obvious?). Or, they’ve seen a change in customer behaviour that’s not yet in your data. Without deeper analysis, you’ll miss these critical signals and continue playing catch-up. Even with looking and believing competitors don’t matter, you have even less chance.

Beyond the Numbers: The Human Element of Competitive Intelligence

That’s the power of going beyond basic data collection. Real competitive intelligence isn’t reactive. It’s predictive. It’s about understanding the bigger picture. It includes market shifts, new tech, regulations, and societal trends. It’s about connecting the dots between unrelated events. When the next market disruption happens, you should be prepared and not just aware. Companies that rely only on past data or today’s rivals often miss tomorrow’s market-shaping moves. And this is the same for Gen AI. It’s data, just a lot more of it. But only if you have massive competitors.

And good luck if your competitor’s revenue is less than £100 million or they don’t give a press release after every bowel movement. This is why many don’t get the benefit of competitive intelligence software. They are brilliant at what they do. But you need to use competitive intelligence thinking to get anything substantive out of it. And don’t get me started with the new SCIP regime.

Dynamics of Competitive Intelligence and Going Beyond the Surface

In a fast-changing world, knowing your competitors’ actions today is like driving a foggy road by looking in the rearview mirror. You need to anticipate where the market is heading, and that only happens when you go beyond surface-level data and look at the deeper forces at play. Competitive intelligence done right turns insights into foresight, positioning you not just to keep up, but to lead.
