The security requirements for clouds change as a technology company expands. A product in the early stages will have a single owner and a single environment, while a company at a later stage can have inherited numerous clouds, the result of acquisitions, regional deployments, and teams that have different methods of shipping software. The first issue is usually inconsistent ownership rather than some sophisticated attack technique.
Cloud security platforms are able to identify and prioritize weaknesses in the various cloud environments they support. A business that is growing should select a solution which will allow it to cope with the next change in its organisation without requiring a full-scale redesign of its security measures. The six platforms under consideration vary in the way that they integrate cloud visibility, developer remediation, runtime protection, and current security operations.
At a glance
| Aikido Security | Engineering-led company growth | Cloud plus AppSec |
| Wiz | Expanding cloud complexity | Connected risk visibility |
| Orca Security | Acquired or inherited estates | Agentless-first discovery |
| Microsoft Defender for Cloud | Microsoft security standardization | Posture and workloads |
| Cortex Cloud | Broader security operations | Cloud through runtime |
| Prowler | Transparent posture standards | Configurable cloud assessment |
1. Aikido Security — Engineering-led company growth
Aikido’s cloud security platform combines posture, infrastructure-as-code, and container-related security capabilities with a broader developer security platform. It is a strong fit when the company’s engineering teams remain responsible for fixing both application and infrastructure issues.
The important aspect to test is repeatability—can a new team put into practice the same process without having to set up its own security infrastructure? You should include in the pilot an unfamiliar repository and a cloud environment that has just been connected. Make sure that ownership, permissions, and remediation stay clear as the number of teams increases.
2. Wiz — Expanding cloud complexity
Wiz offers a comprehensive code-to-cloud security platform that links its findings to information about the cloud and the applications in use, and this is something that becomes important when senior management needs a common overview of a expanding range of services and of several specialist teams.
One should judge that shared view by the decisions it makes. Can the business tell which product has an exposed workload and whether a fix affects the risk? Since growth leads to both organizational ambiguity and technical complexity, testing should include the asset-to-team mapping and the required modules as well as the platform’s ability to discover resources.

3. Orca Security — Acquired or inherited estates
The agentless-first assessment model offered by Orca is useful in cases where a company needs to understand cloud environments that have not adopted a standard method of deployment; it therefore becomes a suitable option when integrating a business that has been acquired or when dealing with inherited infrastructure.
See the first assessment as the beginning of a program and decide who is to approve access, which workloads are included, and how the findings are passed on to the team now responsible for the estate. Broad discovery has only strategic value when it results in a viable ownership and remediation model.
4. Microsoft Defender for Cloud — Microsoft security standardization
Defender for Cloud offers cloud posture management together with workload protection in the environments it supports, and should be taken into account if an organization is moving towards using Microsoft security services and wishes for cloud protection to adhere to that operating model.
For each business unit determine the protections it needs and the plans which provide them. Standardization should serve to simplify accountability rather than hide the differences in workload coverage. If a non-Azure environment exists it should be included in the pilot and it must be checked that the resulting process works for the team which operates those resources.
5. Cortex Cloud — Broader security operations
Cortex Cloud includes capabilities relating to code, the cloud, and runtime security. It is a reasonable choice for companies which are establishing a more formal security operations function and wish to have cloud risk linked to that wider programme.
Assess the interfaces among prevention, vulnerability remediation, and incident response. Since different teams may be responsible for each of these activities, the fact that a single product is used does not mean that the boundaries between them are eliminated. A beneficial platform at the growth stage should be able to meet the organisation’s future needs in terms of coordination without asking every engineer to become an operator of the whole security suite.
6. Prowler — Transparent posture standards
Prowler provides cloud posture assessments via open-source tools and a hosted platform; this option is appropriate whenever the company wants inspectable checks and has the necessary engineering capability to establish and keep its own standards.
That degree of flexibility can assist teams in explaining why a particular control is in place and in adapting their assessments to suit their specific environment. The downside, however, is that it results in a lack of process ownership. To illustrate this, consider the amount of effort required to maintain the checks, schedule the assessments, and report exceptions throughout the various business units. A configurable tool only provides an advantage if the customisations remain properly documented and supported as the organisation evolves.
Evaluate the next acquisition or new product team
Choose Aikido for a developer-led process that is repeatable, Wiz for comprehensive cloud context, and Orca for discovery that does not require agents. When ecosystem alignment with security tools is important, compare Defender and Cortex Cloud; but if your priority is transparent and configurable posture checks, then choose Prowler.
Rather than testing only the most well-managed environment, include one that reflects the company’s likely next challenge. Check the onboarding procedure, the assignment of ownership, how exceptions are handled, and the verified remediation process. Find out who is responsible for maintaining the process when an engineer resigns or when a product changes hands. A platform that deals effectively with organisational change can be more valuable than one that merely looks impressive in comparison with today’s cleanest deployment.
