Identifying the Areas of Your Business to Automate

Automation will always be a tricky topic, and you might find this especially true in the days of artificial intelligence (AI). It’s a topic that everyone has their own opinions about, and your own opinions will likely be affected when you’re concerned about the well-being of your business. However, even here, it’s not as straightforward as automation being beneficial to your business, but it potentially makes people unhappy – some circumstances and situations affect its viability.

Identifying the areas of your business where automation might be most valuable can allow you to adopt a strategic approach to implementing it in your operations.

The Topic of AI

What people might have found most shocking about the presence of AI and how it ultimately debuted into public awareness could be the type of jobs affected. For a long time, the topic of automation has always been related to manual work and how technology could be used to take over jobs that previously put lives at risk. Of course, these wouldn’t be the only candidates, and other attention went towards straightforward jobs where automation would make much sense and lend itself to a reliable formula. That’s not to say there wasn’t controversy when these areas were discussed. Still, the way that AI has worked has aimed at different lines of work than some people might have expected – leading to others becoming more upset about the prospect of it than who were originally. This doesn’t mean that automation in other areas is off the cards, but it does mean that more people are exclusively focused on AI than before. This is something that can open up new jobs and lines of work due to the support needed to operate it in the first place. This has opened the door to new discussions – such as how AI is used in creating scripts and other types of writing in entertainment, the difference in quality that results in, and the protections surrounding jobs.

How does it affect you?

How does this all affect your business? Well, the answer to that ultimately depends on the type of business that you’re operating. If you haven’t yet encountered a situation within your line of work that AI would make easier in any way, then it might not matter to you all that much – although there might be some elements of administration that you’re neglecting. Still, it could be more effort than it’s worth. Instead, it might indeed be those original thoughts of automation that you find relevant to what your business is trying to accomplish.

The Physical Side

Turning your attention back to those areas that immediately spring to mind, such as conveyor belts or specific roles within a wider field, like using demolition robots within construction to make for a more efficient operation, might better fit what your business is about. In this previous example, you can see automation being used as a tool to make a job easier for those working it, rather than taking over the job entirely – which might be something that allows you to increase efficiency without stepping over into the realm of controversy. When used like this, it might be something that your workers are happy to see employed due to the potential easing of their jobs. This won’t always be possible, but finding areas that offer you a middle-ground like this can often represent the ideal outcome – one that everyone can be happy with.

Suppose you find yourself having to make some difficult decisions about whether to automate an aspect of your business in favour of the people currently occupying those roles. In that case, you should focus on your business values for answers. If the difference that the shift would make to your success is projected to be enormous, it might be difficult to see any other solution. However, suppose you’ve established one of your values instead of such a shift. In that case, you’ll likely find it difficult to proceed without alienating a certain portion of your audience and affecting your reputation somehow. Therefore, finding a compromise becomes your best course of action, as you might simply risk falling behind the industry standard.

Some Combination of the Two

However, the areas you want to automate won’t always be so easily distinguishable. In the modern world, digital technology is so closely integrated with different places that it isn’t easy to pull away from it entirely. In the manufacturing world, for example, 3D printers are an example of technology making waves due to how it automates certain elements of the overall process. This can be applied outward to the point where it significantly speeds up the development of prototypes and mass production of the final product.

To some people in this line of work, it might not be easy to imagine functioning without this kind of technology, and that’s how transformative some of these additions can ultimately be. This is yet another instance of the implementations being seen more as tools than automation that adopt roles previously taken on by human workers, even if some might see it as a step in that direction. In this example, identifying the area of your business to automate is less personalised – it’s not about where you’re struggling or where you need to tighten up. It’s about following the trajectory of industry standards to avoid falling behind.

AI might be something that is talked about similarly, especially if you work in an industry that seems to be especially affected by it. However, when there is as much popular attention on it as there is now, there is also a concern about falling on the right side of discourse – even if what side that might be is going to depend on your own values and the dynamic that you hold with your audiences.
